Pearl Gartrell (clockwise from right), Bill Craig, Jim Dime and Dan Swink play bridge, Thursday, Jan. 19, 2023, at the Fort Smith Senior Activity Center in Fort Smith. The foursome were continuing their weekly card game despite the building being partially closed for a floor restoration in progress due to flooding caused by a burst pipe over Christmas weekend last year. Deanna Rice, executive director of the Sebastian Retired Citizens Association, said the large recreation room floor was covered in standing water, requiring the center to close for multiple weeks while a restoration company removed the water and debris. Rice added that the large drying machines were removed only this past weekend, which allowed them to re-open safely for card games, crafts, dances and other activities. Food services were temporarily provided via drive-through but have since been moved to the nearby Baker Center. Rice said they are currently exploring bids for a new floor.
